How to bulk edit Shopify tags: add, remove, or rename in bulk

Tags drive your collections, filters, and automations, so keeping them tidy matters - but tag cleanup is exactly the kind of repetitive job that eats an afternoon. This guide covers how to add, remove, and rename Shopify product tags in bulk, the native options, and where each one stops being practical.

Adding or removing tags with Shopify's admin

Shopify can add or remove tags on several products at once:

  1. Go to Products and tick the products you want to tag.
  2. Click Add tags or Remove tags from the action bar, type the tag, and apply.

You can also click Bulk edit, add the Tags column, and type comma-separated tags into each cell.

Where it falls short: you work a page at a time, so on a large catalog you're repeating the same action across many pages. There's no preview of what's about to change and no undo - and, crucially, no way to rename a tag. To change “summer-2025” to “summer” everywhere, you'd remove the old tag and add the new one across every product by hand.

Renaming a tag with a CSV export/import

The CSV route can rename a tag in a spreadsheet's find-and-replace, then re-import. It works, but it's the whole catalog in one file, with no preview and no rollback - and the tags column is easy to mangle, since a single stray comma changes how Shopify splits your tags. For a tag rename, re-importing every product is a lot of exposure for a small change.

Add, remove, and rename tags inline - with preview and undo

BulkSheet handles all three tag jobs in the grid, with a preview before anything saves.

  • Add or remove in bulk: filter to the right products, then apply a tag template to add or remove a tag across every selected product at once. You see how many rows change before you save, and the whole batch is one undo step. This is on every plan, including Free.
  • Rename across the catalog: use find & replace on the tags column - enter the old tag and the new one, preview the matching rows, and apply. It's one pass and one undo step (find & replace is on Growth and Pro).
  • Find the right products first: filter by tag (plus vendor, status, price, and more) so you're only touching what you mean to.

Because nothing writes to Shopify until you press Save, and any change can be undone, a mis-tagged batch is one click from being put right - see how your catalog stays safe for the details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rename a Shopify tag everywhere at once?

Not with the native admin - you'd remove the old tag and add the new one product by product. Find & replace on the tags column does it in a single previewed pass (a Growth/Pro feature, both with a 7-day free trial on first upgrade).

Can I bulk edit tags for free?

Yes - Shopify's admin adds and removes tags for free, and BulkSheet's free plan includes tag templates (add/remove) with preview and undo, up to 100 product saves per day. Renaming via find & replace is a Growth/Pro feature.
